Missy Elliott Reveals Managing Graves’ Disease Has Been a Daily Challenge

Missy Elliott’s journey into the world of hip-hop has been nothing short of a phenomenon. However, her recent return after an extended hiatus underscores the challenges she faced in the past. Back in 2011, Missy revealed to PEOPLE magazine that she had secretly battled Graves’ Disease, an autoimmune illness affecting her thyroid gland.

“I live with it for the rest of my life,” she explained then. “It started impacting my motor skills and was soon followed by dizzy spells, lumps in my throat, mood swings, hair loss, a fast heart rate, and even bulging eyes.”

For several years, Elliott battled this condition, which initially began affecting her physical abilities. But with the help of radiation therapy combined with medication, she is now feeling much better.

Since her return to performance, Missy has been busy writing and producing for other artists, as well as composing new music. “I feel great,” she declared during an interview. “Under my doctor’s supervision, I’ve been off medication for about a year now, and I’m managing the condition through diet and exercise.”

Graves’ Disease is a persistent autoimmune disorder where the thyroid gland overacts, causing hyperthyroidism—a condition marked by excessive hormone production. Common symptoms include weight loss, rapid heartbeat, anxiety, irritability, heat intolerance, sweating, and trembling.

For some patients, Graves’ ophthalmopathy can also cause bulging eyes. Additionally, fatigue is a common complaint among those affected.

The treatment for this illness typically involves managing thyroid hormone levels through various methods such as antithyroid medications, radioactive iodine therapy, or even surgery in severe cases. In many instances, beta-blockers are used to alleviate symptoms like rapid heart rate and tremors.

Missy Elliott’s ongoing journey with Graves’ Disease serves as a powerful reminder that health battles can be managed effectively through dedication, support, and the right medical care.
