A violent mob stormed a drug rehabilitation centre in Karachi’s Orangi Town on Saturday, sparking gunfire and causing the escape of at least 117 patients, in an episode that has alarmed authorities and residents alike.

Around 150 individuals raided the facility, damaging property and forcing their way in, amid mounting community accusations that the centre is a facade for drug trafficking and that its patients are behind local thefts.

Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar has directed the SSP West to apprehend those responsible without delay, underscoring the government’s concern over the centre’s alleged criminal links and the safety threat posed by the incident.

Police have launched an investigation and search operation to locate the escaped patients and those involved in the attack. Local residents remain on edge as the probe continues.
