National Disaster Management Authority Conducts First Nationwide Search and Rescue Drill
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in Islamabad has successfully conducted its first comprehensive search and rescue simulation exercise aimed at improving disaster response mechanisms across Pakistan. The drill, held at the National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC), focused on enhancing coordination to tackle potential hazards such as monsoon risks, floods, earthquakes, and early warning systems.
The Exercise Involved Multiple Agencies
Multiple agencies and volunteers participated in the drill, including Rescue 1122, civil defence, armed forces, federal and provincial institutions. The NEOC played a key role in ensuring readiness through advanced weather forecasting, satellite data, and timely warnings.
Simulated Scenarios Included Floods and Earthquakes
The simulation included scenarios such as glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF) in Gilgit-Baltistan, widespread flooding across various regions, and earthquakes in Islamabad and Muzaffarabad. Officials reviewed the effectiveness of communication, information sharing, and response times during the drill.
Strengthening Communication and Response Systems
The NDMA chairman emphasized the importance of timely dissemination of information to the public and addressing gaps in the existing response system. Authorities stressed that an integrated and efficient system is crucial for minimizing losses from natural disasters, with a commitment to regular exercises as part of national disaster management strategy.
