Nick Reiner, Rob Reiner’s and Michele Singer Reiner’s son, has petitioned a Los Angeles court to release funds from a family trust. The legal action stems from allegations that he killed his parents.
The petition, filed on Monday, states that trustees managing the account have refused to release payments Reiner is entitled to under the trust without valid legal justification. The trust was structured to provide him with staged payments at specific ages, and the remaining funds are now urgently required.
Reiner, 32, has been charged in connection with his parents’ deaths, which were found on December 14th at their Brentwood home. He has pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder.
The petition claims that the trust, managed by attorney Paul R. Kanin, holds at least $1.5 million, though its exact value is unconfirmed. The trustee has given shifting reasons for withholding payments, including concerns about Reiner’s capacity.
High-profile attorney Alan Jackson, who previously represented Reiner, had withdrawn from the case. His firm would consider resuming representation if funding was restored, according to a supporting declaration by Jackson.
Reiner is due back in court for a pretrial hearing in September as the criminal case continues.
