Nobel laureate Narges Mohammadi hospitalized after health worsens in prison, with reports of collapse and heart complications; doctors say treatment not possible in jail. Tehran-based activist was held in Zanjan prison where she experienced two episodes of unconsciousness and a serious heart condition.
Arrested on December 12 last year in Mashhad, Mohammadi was sentenced to over seven years for charges including conspiracy against the state. Her family alleges she suffered physical abuse during arrest, sustaining injuries that contributed to her declining health.
The Nobel Committee had condemned “life-threatening treatment” of Mohammadi in February. She served a separate 13-year sentence but was granted temporary release late last year on medical grounds. Iranian authorities have not responded to mistreatment allegations.
