The son of Norway’s crown princess pleaded not guilty to rape and domestic violence but admitted to some lesser charges during the trial’s first day. At 29 years old, Marius Borg Hoiby could face multiple years in prison if found guilty of the most serious charges against him, according to Reuters.
Crown Princess Mette-Marit and Crown Prince Haakon’s son has been linked to a series of legal troubles that have rocked Norway’s already embattled royal family. The trial comes amid rising public scrutiny, with polls indicating an erosion in traditional support for the monarchy.
Hoiby’s mother recently apologized for her “poor judgment” in maintaining ties with former US sex offender Jeffrey Epstein after he was convicted in 2008. Days prior to his trial, Hoiby pleaded not guilty to four counts of rape and one count of domestic violence during a hearing.
He admitted guilt to one charge of offensive sexual behavior, as well as driving too fast and without a valid license among other offenses. He also claimed partial guilt for aggravated assault and reckless behavior.
Lead prosecutor Sturla Henriksboe emphasized that Hoiby would be treated like any other Norwegian: “He will not be handled tougher or milder because he is part of this family.” In response, Hoiby’s lawyer argued that his client had received unfair treatment. “The press coverage—over 10,000 articles written about him? … He has experienced books being written about him and more are coming,” said Ellen Holager Andenaes.
Crown Prince Haakon expressed sympathy for the alleged victims: “We think about them. We know many are going through a difficult time.” The prince confirmed that his family loves Hoiby, who is described as an important part of their family. He also stated that as a Norwegian citizen, he has the same responsibilities and rights.
In 2024, Hoiby was accused of physical assault against a woman with whom he had been in a relationship. In his statement to media at that time, he admitted to causing bodily harm while under the influence of cocaine and alcohol and for damaging her apartment, expressing regret over his actions. Most recently, on Sunday, police detained him on suspicion of causing bodily harm using a knife and violating a restraining order.
Norway’s parliament voted overwhelmingly in favor of maintaining the monarchy, rejecting proposed changes. The trial has drawn further scrutiny as new allegations emerge against Hoiby, including possession and transport of 3.5 kg (7.72 pounds) of marijuana.
