Ocean Power Fuels Data Centers’ Growth Amid Climate Crisis

Global warming remains a pressing issue due to continued burning of gas and coal, while the surge in AI data centers is consuming vast amounts of power, exacerbating carbon pollution and increasing electricity costs. According to Garth Sheldon-Coulson, CEO and co-founder of Panthalassa, this trend will not abate.

Sheldon-Coulson proposes a solution that addresses both issues: harnessing wave energy. He describes Panthalassa’s Ocean-2 model as akin to a floating hydroelectric dam, where moving waves force water through turbines to generate electricity. The latest design, the Ocean-3, is self-propelled and untethered from the ocean floor, functioning like an oversized Roomba.

Without cables for power transmission back to shore, these systems can serve as floating data centers. They generate energy from waves, process AI tasks on-site, and transmit results via satellite. When multiple units are deployed, they function as a single data center, offering a cleaner alternative to land-based facilities.

Panthalassa has secured all necessary private funding for the Ocean-3 project, which is expected to be operational by August of this year. The advantages include being clean, requiring no fuel, occupying no land space, and allowing rapid scaling. Ultimately, Sheldon-Coulson envisions deploying thousands of these units across the ocean.

This timely innovation promises a cleaner, more sustainable solution to meet growing energy demands for AI data centers.
