Pakistan Says India’s Occupation of Kashmir is Root Cause of South Asian Instability

Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar, stated during a Security Council debate on peace, justice, and multilateralism that India’s illegal occupation of Kashmir is the primary source of instability in South Asia. Iftikhar emphasized the importance of upholding international law for ensuring peace, justice, and collective security. He pointed out that unilateral actions have undermined these principles, leading to increased conflict and undermining stability.

Iftikhar highlighted Pakistan’s own experiences with such violations, including India’s aggression last year by violating Pakistan’s sovereignty. While asserting that Pakistan responded responsibly and proportionately in self-defense, he underscored the unacceptable nature of oppression under any circumstances. He reaffirmed that the standard between states should be respect for international law.

Iftikhar further addressed India’s unilateral actions, such as its suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, which he described as a violation of international law and detrimental to regional peace and security. He condemned India’s behavior in Kashmir, stating it endangers sustainable peace by denying the Kashmiri people their right to self-determination. Iftikhar asserted that this denial constitutes a grave human rights violation.

In conclusion, Asim Iftikhar reiterated Pakistan’s position against any form of coercion or exceptionalism and emphasized that only through adherence to international law can there be genuine progress toward peace and stability in South Asia.
