Philippine House Justice Committee Finds Probable Cause for Vice President Sara Duterte’s Impeachment
The Philippine House justice committee has found probable cause to impeach Vice President Sara Duterte, marking a significant step towards an impeachment process that could potentially disrupt her presidential aspirations. The committee’s findings will be presented to the plenary session when Congress reconvenes next month, with a third of its members required to vote in favor for the case to proceed to the Senate.
Impeachment was sought by civil society and leftist groups accusing Duterte of misappropriating public funds, amassing unexplained wealth, and threatening the lives of her political rival, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., his wife, and his cousin, former House Speaker. The impeachment process has been met with strong opposition from Duterte’s camp, who deny any wrongdoing and claim it is politically motivated.
Duterte remains embroiled in a bitter public dispute with Marcos, whom she ran alongside in the 2022 elections that both won decisively. Despite these tensions, Duterte announced her intention to run for president in 2028, expressing regret over helping Marcos become president.
The potential impeachment of Duterte could have significant implications for the political landscape in the Philippines, as it would be a historic moment if she becomes the second most senior official to face such proceedings after former President Joseph Estrada. Three other officials, including an ombudsman and an election commission head who resigned before their trials, and former Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona, have also been impeached, with Corona being the only one convicted so far.
A previous attempt to impeach Duterte on similar allegations was backed by a Congress majority loyal to Marcos but was dismissed by the Supreme Court in July last year due to a procedural flaw. Marcos himself survived an impeachment bid in February after his allies in Congress voted to dismiss it.
