The Pope’s Palm Sunday Homily Stresses Rejection of War Prayers
On Monday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended prayers for US troops engaged in the Iran war following Pope Leo XIV’s comments. The pontiff stated during his Palm Sunday homily that this is our God… A God who refuses war… who does not listen to the prayer of those who wage war.”
The conflict has been ongoing since February 28, with Pope Leo XIV, the first US-born pope, repeatedly condemning the war and calling for dialogue. However, he has been cautious in his statements, refraining from naming any party in his condemnations and appeals for peace.
Leavitt, along with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, also Catholic, emphasized that the United States was founded on Judeo-Christian values during a press conference. She stated that leaders and troops have prayed “during the most turbulent times in our nation’s history” and that many servicemembers appreciate these prayers.
