Awais Qadir Shah, representing the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), has secured victory as the 12th Speaker of the Sindh Assembly.
In the polling for assembly speaker, a total of 147 provincial assembly members cast their votes. Outgoing speaker Agha Siraj Durrani announced the results, with Awais Qadir garnering 111 votes, defeating MQM’s Advocate Sofia Shah, who secured 36 votes.
However, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Jamat-e-Islami (JI) chose to boycott the polling for the election of speaker and deputy speaker of the Sindh Assembly.
Agha Siraj Durrani, the outgoing speaker, administered the oath to the newly elected speaker, Awais Qadir Shah.
Awais Qadir Shah, who also won on PS-23 Sukkur with 69,266 votes, defeating GDA’s Inayatullah with 21,137 votes, has been declared the winner.
Earlier, Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani oversaw the oath-taking ceremony of elected members of the Sindh Assembly, with PPP holding the largest parliamentary group with 114 seats.
