Punjab Issues Labour Code 2026

The Government of Punjab has officially notified the new Labour Code 2026, marking a significant step towards consolidating multiple existing labor laws into one unified framework. The code was approved by the Governor and published in the official gazette.

This legislation strengthens legal protection against forced, bonded, and child labor, with enhanced enforcement mechanisms to safeguard workers’ rights. For the first time, gig workers, including those involved in food delivery services, app-based platforms, and ride-hailing services, are included under labor legislation.

The code also extends protections to digital platform workers and those working remotely from home, ensuring they receive equal legal recognition and protection. It makes it harder for employers to deny contract workers permanent employment rights and introduces stricter provisions against workplace harassment and violence.

Non-compete clauses have been restricted, allowing employees to join other companies after leaving a job. The legislation also discourages policies that keep salaries confidential, promoting wage transparency across all workplaces.

Aligned with international labor standards set by the International Labour Organization, this code applies uniformly to domestic workers, agricultural laborers, and construction workers, ensuring equal legal protection for all categories of workers in Punjab.
