The Punjab government has unveiled a Rs3 billion initiative to combat smog in Lahore by installing 30 advanced fog cannon-equipped electric trucks across the city, marking an ambitious push towards cleaner air amid escalating pollution levels. This project is part of a comprehensive clean air and climate resilience strategy designed to reduce particulate matter and enhance environmental safeguards.

Punjab officials revealed that these electric vehicles will be deployed in urban centers and industrial zones prone to dust accumulation, leveraging fog cannons to control airborne pollutants effectively. A Rs2.25 billion allocation has also been made under the Lahore Air Improvement Framework to initiate a coordinated clean air program within the provincial capital. This investment includes real-time pollution detection systems via a newly introduced super station system.

The “One City, One Policy” model is being implemented in Lahore to modernize and streamline air quality management. Over 50 modern air quality monitoring stations have already been installed across the province, complemented by an automated quality assurance system that aims to improve data accuracy and transparency. Additionally, a digital environmental monitoring mechanism will tighten oversight of industrial emissions.

To support these efforts, the government has approved upgrades for environmental laboratories and installation of advanced analytical equipment, alongside the establishment of dedicated forensic facilities for emission testing. A new Environment and Climate Delivery Unit is being established to oversee implementation through a digital dashboard, ensuring compliance with environmental targets.

This multi-faceted approach underscores Punjab’s commitment to tackling pollution head-on, reflecting its proactive stance in safeguarding public health and preserving the environment.
