Astronomical data shows that the moon will rise at approximately 7:22pm and remain visible throughout the night. Skywatchers across Pakistan will be able to witness a rare astronomical event, known as a Blue Moon, tonight.
According to astronomers, a second full moon is appearing in May 2026, a phenomenon referred to as a Blue Moon in astronomical terms. Experts say this rare event typically occurs once every two to three years.
In Lahore, the Blue Moon will be visible shortly after moonrise this evening. Astronomical data shows that the moon will rise at approximately 7:22 PM and remain visible throughout the night.
The most captivating view is expected between 7:30 PM and 10:00 PM in the eastern sky, while clear weather conditions may allow citizens to observe it all night.
Professor Dr Syed Aamir Mahmood, Chairperson of the Department of Space Science at Punjab University, explained that a Blue Moon does not refer to the color of the moon but is a scientific term. When two full moons occur within a single calendar month, the second one is called a Blue Moon.
He further noted that the first full moon of May 2026 occurred on May 1, while the second is taking place on May 31.
Dr Mahmood also said that this Blue Moon is a “Micromoon,” meaning the moon is relatively farther from Earth in its orbit. As a result, it may appear slightly smaller and dimmer than a typical full moon.
Astronomical calculations indicate that the Blue Moon reached its full phase at around 1:45 PM Pakistan time; however, it was not visible from Lahore at that time. Therefore, the best viewing opportunity for the public will be tonight after moonrise.
Experts advise citizens to observe the phenomenon from open spaces, parks, or rooftops of tall buildings facing east, where light pollution is minimal and the sky is clearer.
