Real Madrid Draw Girona in LaLiga, Stretches Barcelona’s Lead to Top Spot

Real Madrid’s 1-1 draw against Girona in LaLiga on Friday night extended the hosts’ winless run to three games across all competitions. Federico Valverde scored for Real six minutes after halftime, but Thomas Lemar equalized for Girona in the 62nd minute. This result gives Barcelona the chance to extend their advantage at the top of the table.

Barcelona currently leads with 76 points, six ahead of second-placed Real Madrid, who have now played one more game. The Catalan side visits Espanyol on Saturday and can move nine clear with seven matches left if they maintain their form.

Real began the night under pressure after a loss to Mallorca last weekend, which saw them trail Barcelona by seven points. Coach Alvaro Arbeloa opted for a full-strength lineup despite the Champions League quarter-final second leg against Bayern Munich looming next Wednesday. Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr led the line, with Jude Bellingham in midfield.

For Real, possession was their main strength throughout the first half, which lacked tempo and inspiration. Girona were content to sit deep and spring forward when possible. The match finally flickered into life after halftime, with Valverde breaking the deadlock in the 51st minute. However, Lemar equalized for Girona in the 62nd minute, forcing a diving save from goalkeeper Andriy Lunin.

Real pushed for a winner but urgency turned to anxiety as attacks became hurried and passes rushed. The final whistle was greeted with unease around the Bernabeu, as Real’s stuttering form leaves the title race tilting ever more firmly towards their old rivals Barcelona.
