Red Fox Stowaway Crosses Atlantic to NYC Zoo

A peculiar tale has captivated the public as a red fox, unexpectedly stowing away on a cargo ship off Southampton’s coast and embarking on an epic journey across the Atlantic. The adventure of this young male fox, estimated to be around two years old and weighing about 11 pounds or 5 kilograms, began when US officials at the Port of New York and New Jersey discovered him among the shipments.

He was swiftly transported by air to the Bronx Zoo in New York City where a team of veterinary professionals has been monitoring his health. Initial examinations indicated that he is doing well so far, although additional routine screenings are pending for more comprehensive results. Keith Lovett, the zoo’s director of animal programs, noted: “It seems to be adjusting quite comfortably here.”

The fox’s journey highlights its remarkable ability to thrive in diverse environments, including urban settings where it can scavenge from fruits and rodents. The Bronx Zoo described red foxes as among the most widespread carnivorous mammals globally.

According to zoo officials, this particular red fox made a daring decision, opting to travel by ship rather than adopt more conventional modes of transport such as cars or cruises. Despite its audacious choice, the port’s spokesperson from Associated British Ports in Southampton was quick to offer advice: “Though we were surprised to find a fox on board, it appears it sought comfort and safety across the ocean via the Staten Island Ferry.”

As for how the animal managed to sneak onto the ship while docked at the English port city, authorities remain uncertain. The red fox’s journey has now landed him in the care of the Bronx Zoo, where he is expected to find a new home once his health stabilizes.

The case not only showcases the adaptability and resilience of these adaptable creatures but also highlights the unexpected crossings that can occur with cargo shipments navigating international waters.
