US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated significant progress has been made in US-Iran negotiations over the past 48 hours. Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi, Rubio expressed hope for “good news” soon, linking it to the Strait of Hormuz and a diplomatic process aimed at preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
Rubio reiterated that Iran can never possess a nuclear weapon, according to Trump’s administration. He emphasized that Iran currently threatens commercial ships using international routes illegally, which he warned could set a dangerous precedent if allowed.
The secretary noted progress on several issues related to Iran’s nuclear ambitions and the restoration of free navigation in the Strait of Hormuz without charges. However, he stressed that Iran’s approval and compliance are also necessary for further details to be worked out.
Rubio explained that negotiations on Iran’s highly technical nuclear program would take time, emphasizing that agreements must ultimately be enforced in practice.
