Rubio to Visit Vatican, Rome Amid Trump-Pope Dispute

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will visit Rome and the Vatican this week, an Italian government source said on Sunday.

Rubio, who is Catholic, is expected to meet with Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin and Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani. The meetings are also anticipated to include a session with Defence Minister Guido Crosetto.

These gatherings come weeks after US President Trump’s intense criticism of Pope Leo over the pontiff’s anti-war stance. Trump dismissed Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, one of his closest European allies, as lacking courage for defending the US pontiff.
