Last year marked the deadliest for civilians since Russia’s invasion intensified its aerial bombardment behind the front lines. According to the U.N. Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, 2,514 civilians perished and 12,142 were injured in 2025—31% more than the previous year.

On Wednesday, a Russian drone descended from the night sky, landing with an ear-splitting boom that shattered glass and sent terrified residents fleeing. In just moments, it decimated a small brick home, reducing it to little more than rubble. Inside, amidst the wreckage, lay three lives brutally cut short: a father, his pregnant wife in her 35th week of pregnancy, and their two young children aged 2 and under.

The Kharkiv regional prosecutor’s office confirmed that a Russian-made Geran-2 drone had targeted this home late last night. The strike obliterated the house entirely and set it ablaze, trapping three members of the family beneath its debris as they tried to flee the inferno.

Rescue teams eventually managed to pull their mother alive from her perilous circumstances—despite sustaining severe injuries including blast trauma, a traumatic brain injury, burns, and hearing loss. She is currently fighting for her life in intensive care, while her children lie dead at her feet.

The father was 34 years old and had three small children: twin boys aged two and their one-year-old sister. Their mother survived only to endure the unbearable grief of watching them go—three lives extinguished by a single act of terror.

This latest tragedy resonates deeply in Bohodukhiv, which held a population of 15,000 before Russia’s invasion. Located just over two miles from its border, the town bears witness to the relentless bombardment that has defined this chapter of Ukrainian history.

“The future is gone,” Mayor Volodymyr Bielyi wrote on his Facebook page with profound sorrow. “There are no words to console a mother who lost her children; no prayer can heal her broken heart.”

Bohodukhiv’s residents have endured for nearly four years, yet last year saw the greatest loss of life. Amidst this grim backdrop, Ukraine and its allies continue their quest for peace, though progress remains elusive.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed frustration at Russia’s continued war crimes: “Each strike underscores the need for strong diplomatic pressure on Moscow to end these attacks. Only clear security guarantees for Ukraine offer a pathway toward stopping the carnage,” he stated on social media.

Ukraine has not shied away from holding Russian officials accountable, with efforts ranging from court cases to international organizations. The International Criminal Court in The Hague has issued arrest warrants for Russian leaders including Vladimir Putin over war crimes committed against children in Ukraine.

Zelenskyy highlighted the critical need for more sophisticated air defense systems and missiles: “We must address our vulnerabilities to Russian drones,” he declared. Yet, despite challenges like wide-scale desertions, some 2 million Ukrainians dodging conscription, and a decrease of military aid last year (13% compared to previous years), European countries have stepped in.

Bohodukhiv’s plight mirrors broader concerns: as Ukraine fights against Russia’s overwhelming numerical superiority, it continues to seek allies for defense. In the meantime, life goes on—albeit with heavy hearts—and Ukrainians vow not to forget those who fell in this ongoing struggle.
