Russian Man Sentenced for Assault in London

A Russian man, Matvei Rumiantsev, was sentenced to four years in prison on January 28th for assaulting a woman in London. The attack occurred on January 18th when Rumiantsev became jealous of the victim’s friendship with Barron Trump.

Justice Joel Bennathan stated that Rumiantsev was “totally unrepentant” and had sent her a letter from jail asking her to retract her allegations. During the assault, Rumiantsev answered a FaceTime call from Barron Trump on the woman’s phone, showing her crying on the floor.

Barron Trump then called British emergency services and pleaded for help for the woman. The victim was entitled to anonymity under U.K. law and had met the president’s son through social media.

Rumiantsev testified that he felt jealous of Trump but also felt badly for him, explaining his actions to the court during the trial. Defense lawyer Sasha Wass argued that Trump didn’t know about the woman’s boyfriend and questioned how much he could have seen in a short video clip.

Trump, now 19, did not testify in the case. The judge advised jurors to treat Barron Trump’s accounts with caution due to lack of cross-examination.

Haley Ott contributed this report.
