Savannah Guthrie returned to the Today show on April 6. She was issued a ‘secret code’ if she needed off air due to any development in her mother Nancy’s kidnapping.
The NBC has a contingency plan for Savannah, according to a report by the Daily Mail. If a major development breaks live about Nancy’s abduction while Savannah is on air, a producer would tell her she’s “needed off set.”
Savannah was informed of this secret code. The close confidant tells the publisher, “We would pull her immediately, mid-segment if we had to.” She knows that when one of the producers tells her she’s “needed off set,” there is news about her mom.
The source says Savannah trusts the network to tell the story respectfully and has accepted that NBC will not hold any developments on Nancy’s case out of sensitivity for her. The Today host understands that she has a public invested in Nancy’s story, and knows they wouldn’t wait for her to find out before reporting it.
