
Government of Sindh Announces Public Holiday for Labour Day
The Government of Sindh has declared a public holiday across the province on Friday, May 1, 2026, to commemorate Labour Day. This official notification applies to all government and private institutions.
All government offices, subordinate departments, autonomous bodies, corporations, and local councils under provincial administration will remain closed for the day. However, essential services will continue operating as usual.
The State Bank of Pakistan also confirmed a nationwide bank holiday on May 1, meaning all banking operations will be suspended.
Labour Day, observed annually on May 1 globally, honors workers’ contributions and rights. It originated from labour movements in Chicago in 1886, where protests against exploitation led to casualties and executions. In Pakistan, Labour Day has been officially recognized since 1973 during Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s tenure.
This year’s holiday falls on a Friday, extending into the weekend for both public and private sector employees.
