Swiss Voters Reject Population Cap Initiative

Swiss voters rejected a proposal to cap the nation’s population at 10 million on Sunday. Early results indicated that nearly 53% of those who cast ballots opposed the measure.

The initiative was championed by the right-wing Swiss People’s Party, which has fostered anti-migration sentiment in recent years. Critics argue that the surge in migration has strained infrastructure and social programs.

Switzerland is not an EU member but is surrounded by four member states. The proposal could jeopardize its deep ties to the bloc, including economic growth and cross-border travel agreements.

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development reported Switzerland’s foreign-born population at 32% as of 2024, making it one of the highest in the OECD.

Swiss democracy allows voters to directly influence policymaking through referendums. This particular referendum was among four held this year, with most ballots cast via mail.
