The third installment of ‘The Princess Diaries’ franchise remains in development despite delays. Author Meg Cabot confirmed at BookCon 2026 that filming has not yet begun due to Anne Hathaway’s packed schedule.
Hathaway, who starred in the original film and is expected to reprise her role, is currently tied up with multiple projects for 2026, including ‘Mother Mary’, ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’, ‘The Odyssey’, ‘Flowervale Street’, and ‘Verity’. This has slowed production.
A filming location has been secured but the project remains in a holding pattern. Cabot expressed optimism about the film’s eventual release, hinting at steady progress behind the scenes.
The sequel is set to continue Mia Thermopolis’ story as Queen of Genovia, with director Adele Lim attached. However, her return and that of Chris Pine and Mandy Moore from the original film has not been confirmed.
Julie Andrews, who played Queen Clarisse Renaldi in the first film, has yet to confirm if she will reprise her role, adding an element of uncertainty to the project. Despite these delays, fans remain enthusiastic about the return to Genovia.
