The United States will send an additional 5,000 troops to Poland, announced US President Donald Trump on Thursday. The decision was made due to his relationship with Poland’s conservative nationalist president, Karol Nawrocki, according to a Truth Social post.
This announcement comes two days after US Vice President JD Vance told reporters that a US troop deployment to Poland had been delayed. The US had been reviewing its troop presence in Europe and it was expected that the country would scale back following Trump’s demands for NATO to take a larger role in defending Europe.
Trump cited his endorsement of Nawrocki, whom he backed against the pro-European candidate at the White House in May last year, as the reason for sending more troops. He reiterated this commitment during another meeting with Nawrocki at the White House in September.
