President Donald Trump has maintained a dual strategy in deciding who might succeed him as Republican nominee for 2028. By refusing to choose between Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, he is intensifying competition among his top lieutenants.
Following the recent announcements, speculation within Republican circles now centers around former Florida senator Marco Rubio’s potential run for president again in 2028. In an interview with NBC News, Trump indicated he might endorse a successor but refrained from specifics at this juncture.
During the conversation, Trump acknowledged Rubio’s diplomatic role while noting that “I would say one is slightly more diplomatic than the other.” He added, “You know you can see the style yourself. But they’re both very capable.”
Trump also expressed confidence in the combined capabilities of Vice President Pence and Secretary of State Pompeo, stating, “The combination of Mike Pence and Mike Pompeo would be very hard to beat. You never know about politics,” he noted.
Recent interviews revealed Trump’s interest in possibly seeking a third term—a prospect that had previously been dropped but now seems resurfacing in his mind.
