Trump Names Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin to Lead DHS

Donald Trump has elevated Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin to lead the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) after he relieved Kristi Noem from her position.

Noem’s abrupt departure from the DHS, following months of increasing pressure, underscores the turbulent environment within the department. The White House claimed no direct association with a $20 million self-promotional ad campaign aimed at undocumented immigrants to encourage them to leave their home countries. This has been interpreted as a significant rift between Noem and the administration.

Markwayne Mullin, now set to take over on March 31, 2026, is a career politician with deep ties to Oklahoma’s political landscape. He served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for Oklahoma’s second district from 2013 until 2023 and entered the Senate in 2023 after winning a special election. His tenure in Congress saw Mullin make history by becoming only the second Cherokee citizen to serve in the United States Senate.

Trump highlighted his commitment to Mullin, stating, “As the wonderful people of Oklahoma will attest, Markwayne has done an outstanding job representing our great state.” Prior to entering politics, he was a businessman who built his career in construction and property development without completing a bachelor’s degree.

Mullin is known as a staunch supporter of Trump and holds a prominent place within the administration due to policy alignment and his combative leadership style. His strong stance on immigration has been evident throughout his tenure, including co-sponsoring legislation like the Laken Riley Act. Mullin has often championed ending birthright citizenship incentives for undocumented immigrants, stating that children of such parents should follow their parents into deportation.

Criticism from ICE regarding its crackdowns has led to controversy within DHS. Mullin views this as a critical role in implementing Trump’s policies and ensuring border security. His advocacy positions him as the department’s staunch protector against local opposition efforts, including those aimed at obstructing federal law enforcement.

As the only Native American senator, Mullin brings unique perspectives on indigenous affairs to his leadership. Trump emphasized this aspect, saying, “With our incredible tribal communities in mind, Markwayne is an outstanding advocate for Native Americans.” Given his background as a mixed martial arts fighter, Mullin’s experience and charisma are expected to enhance how he oversees border security.

The transition to Mullin marks a significant change at the DHS under Trump. His appointment reflects both policy alignment with Trump’s vision and the administration’s preference for leaders who can effectively communicate their views on crucial national issues.
