Trump Declares No Intent to Extend Iran Ceasefire

Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that he does not intend to extend the current ceasefire with Iran. He warned of potential military action if a deal is not reached soon.

In an interview with CNBC, Trump said Washington was in a strong position during negotiations and was prepared for escalation. “I don’t want to do that,” he added, indicating his expectation of securing a ‘great deal’.

The US Military Seizes Iranian Tanker

US forces seized an Iranian tanker in international waters, potentially part of efforts to enforce a blockade. The vessel, identified as the Tifani, was boarded without incident.

Trump Accuses Iran of Violating Ceasefire

Trump accused Tehran of repeatedly violating the ceasefire but did not provide specifics. No immediate response from Iran on the tanker seizure.

Diplomatic Talks in Islamabad Remain Uncertain

With the final hours of the two-week ceasefire approaching, uncertainty remains over a possible new round of talks in Islamabad. While Washington expressed confidence in negotiations proceeding, an Iranian official said Tehran is still considering participation.

Trump Warns of Military Action if Iran Refuses US Terms

Trump warned that he could restart military operations, including strikes on civilian infrastructure, if Iran refuses US terms. A previous round of talks ended without agreement 10 days ago amid the ongoing blockade and seizure of Iranian-linked vessels.

Iranian Commanders Warn of Immediate Response to US Actions

An Iranian military commander warned of an immediate and decisive response to any renewed US action. Meanwhile, senior Iranian figure Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf accused Trump of increasing pressure through the blockade and attempting to force concessions.

Strait Tensions Intensify as Iran Reopens Strait of Hormuz Access

Iran said one of its tankers had successfully entered territorial waters from the Arabian Sea with naval support despite US warnings. At the same time, Tehran has largely closed the Strait of Hormuz to foreign vessels, reversing an earlier decision to reopen it after Washington refused to lift sanctions.

The closure has disrupted the flow of roughly 20 million barrels of oil per day, intensifying concerns over global energy supplies and economic stability.

Nuclear Dispute Remains Key Sticking Point

A key sticking point remains Iran’s nuclear programme. Trump insisted any agreement must prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons and called for it to relinquish its stockpile of highly enriched uranium. Iran maintains its nuclear activities are for peaceful purposes, seeking sanctions relief while preserving elements of its programme.

The ceasefire, initially announced on April 7, is expected to expire late on April 22, with only a narrow window left for diplomacy. The conflict has already caused significant casualties and sent shockwaves through global energy markets, raising fears of wider economic fallout.
