U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to impose 100% tariffs on goods from countries imposing digital services taxes on American companies, escalating transatlantic trade tensions. This decision follows European Union countries failing to meet a July 4 deadline to eliminate tariffs on U.S. goods.
Trump stated in a social media post that any country imposing such a tax would face immediate 100% tariff on all U.S. imports, overriding existing trade agreements. The president emphasized these tariffs would supersede any prior deals, including the 2019 agreement with the EU which limited U.S. tariffs to 15% and required EU countries to reduce tariffs on American industrial goods to zero.
The threat of increased tariffs prompted a swift response from the EU, leading to efforts to meet Trump’s deadline for implementing changes by July 4. The administration signaled it would impose penalties immediately if any foreign government enacted digital services taxes.
