U.K. Jets Intercept Russian Plane Near Carrier Off Iceland During NATO Ops

Russian patrol aircraft conducted unsafe maneuvers near the U.K.’s flagship carrier during NATO air defense operations off Iceland, according to Britain’s defense ministry. The Bear-F plane repeatedly approached HMS Prince of Wales at low altitude and dropped sonar devices nearby, an act deemed “unsafe and unprofessional” by a ministry spokesperson.

The incident occurred in the Norwegian Sea as part of Operation FIRECREST, with two U.K. F-35 warplanes dispatched to intercept and escort the Russian aircraft until it departed. The visit from Defense Secretary Dan Jarvis and Icelandic Foreign Minister Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir further highlights the tensions amid heightened military activity.

The deployment is a significant step in NATO’s defense against increasing Russian threats, with military experts noting Russia has intensified its hybrid warfare tactics in the region. In April, two Russian jets dangerously intercepted a British surveillance aircraft over the Black Sea, and in June, a Russian frigate fired warning shots at a yacht crewed by a retired couple in the English Channel.

The deployment of HMS Prince of Wales underscores NATO’s enhanced presence in the strategically important region, as outlined by Jarvis and Gunnarsdottir. The mission aims to improve deterrence and defense against potential threats from Russia, which has been reported to have an attack on a NATO country within the next four years.
