UAE Phasing Out Physical Health Cards for Digital System

The United Arab Emirates is set to phase out its traditional physical health card system by 2026, marking a significant shift towards a fully digital and insurance-based healthcare framework.

Health authorities have initiated this transition as part of broader efforts to modernize the sector. The existing physical health cards will be gradually replaced with an integrated digital platform for accessing medical services, leveraging advanced health insurance coverage and digital identification systems.

According to officials, many patients already benefit from their medical records stored on interconnected digital platforms, diminishing the need for a separate physical card. This new system aims not only to enhance administrative efficiency but also to speed up service delivery in both public and private healthcare facilities across the UAE.

Residents are advised to verify their health insurance policies and stay updated through official government channels regarding updates and implementation timelines. The transition is scheduled to take effect from 2026, with preparatory campaigns by relevant institutions expected to begin this year. Comprehensive guidance will be provided to existing users throughout the process to ensure minimal disruption.

Health officials emphasize that while the changeover will occur in phases, it aims to minimize any potential disruption and maximize benefits for patients and healthcare providers alike. Further details on specific implementation plans are anticipated shortly.
