
In a move that underscores escalating tensions across the Middle East, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Thursday that four additional Typhoon fighter jets would be dispatched to Qatar. This deployment comes amidst scrutiny over Britain’s cautious response to the Iran crisis and a recent drone attack on its key military base in Cyprus.
Starmer emphasized that the UK possesses the appropriate defense strategy and had already pre-deployed military equipment across the region prior to the onset of conflict. “My focus is providing calm, level-headed leadership for the national interest,” he stated during a press conference.
The US President Donald Trump has also criticized Starmer’s efforts in supporting strikes on Iran. In his remarks, Starmer insisted that Britain’s defense plan was correct and had already begun reinforcing military presence across the region.
Starmer went on to detail the UK’s specific plans for Qatar, stating that four additional Typhoon jets would be sent to bolster defensive operations there and in the broader Middle Eastern theater.
“We have the right plan for defence,” Starmer reiterated. “And it is clear we must stand firm by our values and principles, whatever the external pressures may be.”
