At least four people were killed, including three in the Moscow region, after Ukraine launched its biggest overnight drone attack on the Russian capital in more than a year. Local officials confirmed the deaths.
Russia’s defence ministry reported that over 1,000 Ukrainian drones had been downed across Russia in the past 24 hours. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy vowed retribution following Russia’s heaviest drone and missile attacks on Kyiv since the war began more than four years ago.
Zelenskiy posted a video on X showing a drone in flight, columns of black smoke, and fire crews trying to extinguish flames. He stated that Ukraine was able to strike targets over 500 km from the border despite dense Russian air defences around Moscow.
The Ukrainian military’s General Staff reported one strike triggered a fire at a plant outside Moscow producing high-precision weapons. Another command point overseeing drone flights was hit in a Russian-occupied part of Donetsk region.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said air defences had destroyed 81 drones headed for Moscow since midnight, the largest attack on the capital in more than a year. He reported that 12 people were wounded and three houses damaged near the entrance to Moscow’s oil refinery. The technology at the refinery was not affected.
