UK’s Starmer defends Iran stance against Trump criticism

In his address to parliament, Prime Minister Keir Starmer defended Britain’s actions in the Middle East, brushing aside President Donald Trump’s criticism over London’s refusal to join airstrikes against Iran. He emphasized that decisions were guided by law and national interest.

Starman highlighted how Britain did not participate in initial strikes on Iran but stood firm on not engaging in offensive military action. His decision was informed by the protection of British citizens and allies in regions under threat from Iranian drone and missile strikes, particularly after these weapons caused harm to Britons.

The UK Prime Minister outlined his stance: “We were not involved in the initial strikes against Iran, and we will not join offensive action now. But we must protect our people in the region.” He defended his position, noting that Britain had learned from previous mistakes such as the Iraq War of 2003, where the country mistakenly backed military action without proper evidence.

Starman emphasized Britain’s commitment to international law: “Any UK actions must always have a lawful basis and a viable plan. This government does not believe in regime change from the skies.” His comments were met with criticism from opposition parties for appearing indecisive during the recent strikes, but he maintained his stance.

In response to Trump’s interview where the U.S. President expressed frustration over Britain’s delayed approval of U.S. operations on Diego Garcia airbase, Starman clarified that acceptance came later after a U.S. request for “defensive” strikes against Iranian targets. He also pointed out that Iran had escalated their attacks with more reckless methods, which Starman believed would only intensify the danger to civilians.

On Sunday, an Iranian-made drone struck Britain’s RAF Akrotiri base in Cyprus, causing limited damage and no casualties. This incident further underscored the importance of military bases for regional defense and protection of British citizens. Starman insisted that this move was necessary to safeguard the 300,000 Britons living in the region.

Despite these actions, critics from opposition parties accused Starman of making another U-turn on policies and labeling his response as “pathetic.” He countered with a firm statement: “The death of Iran’s Supreme Leader will not stop them. Their approach is becoming even more reckless.”

Starman’s spokesperson assured that bilateral relations remained strong between the UK and the United States, despite recent disagreements over the Chagos Islands sovereignty issue.

Throughout his remarks, Starman reiterated Britain’s commitment to protecting its citizens in regions under threat, emphasizing a balance between legal obligations and national interests. His address underscores the complexities of modern military diplomacy and the delicate balancing act involved in international relations.
