Global perceptions of the US have worsened for the second year running and are now worse than views of Russia, according to an annual study on democracy. The Alliance of Democracies Foundation, based in Denmark, found that the US was most frequently named as posing the greatest threat to the world after Russia and Israel.
US President Donald Trump’s policies have strained NATO relations, with tariffs, threats to control Greenland, reduced aid to Ukraine, and the war against Iran contributing to tensions. This has led Trump to consider withdrawing from NATO, further weakening the alliance.
The Democracy Perception Index survey, conducted by Nira Data among over 94,000 respondents in 98 countries, showed a net perception of the US at -16% compared to +22% two years ago, placing it behind Russia at -11% and China at +7%.
