Waymo Recalls Robotaxis Over Freeway Construction Zone Failures

Waymo recalls nearly 3,900 robotaxis due to software failing to recognize ramp closures and construction zones in Arizona and California. The recall follows incidents reviewed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in April and May. It affects Waymo’s 5th Generation Automated Driving System (ADS), powering its Jaguar fleet.

The NHTSA states that under certain conditions, the autonomous vehicle may enter freeway construction zones due to prioritizing avoidance of other hazards or failing to recognize closures. Six incidents occurred in Phoenix, where robotaxis failed to recognize ramp-closure signs and entered construction zones. Seven incidents happened in San Francisco in May, with vehicles driving between cones marking closures.

“Driving at speed in a freeway construction zone increases the potential for collisions,” NHTSA said. One incident involved a Waymo vehicle speeding through a construction zone in San Mateo, California, leading to police pursuit and veering into a residential area. The affected robotaxis were given three free rides by Waymo, each worth up to $40, but users unsure about future use.
