WhatsApp is gearing up to introduce a voice message transcription feature for Android users, mirroring the convenience enjoyed by iOS users for nearly a year.
According to reports, WhatsApp is actively developing this functionality for its Android platform, aiming to provide users with a time-saving feature. The presence of code in WhatsApp Beta for Android (version 2.24.7.7) suggests that this feature is currently in development, as outlined by TheSpAndroid’s AssembleDebug.
The upcoming feature will utilize the device’s speech recognition software, enabling users to convert voice messages into text. It’s worth noting that enabling transcription will necessitate a 150MB download, as revealed by the code breakdown.
Despite the transcription process, user privacy will remain intact, as end-to-end encryption will extend to voice transcripts. The feature is expected to be conveniently accessible within the Settings > Chats menu.
While there is no specific release date provided, the feature could potentially debut in future WhatsApp beta releases. Once launched, WhatsApp will be on par with competitors like Telegram and Google Messages, which already offer transcription tools on the Android platform.
Although the full extent of the feature’s capabilities is yet to be disclosed, it promises to be a valuable addition for WhatsApp users on Android
