Study Finds European Heat Waves Killed 50,000 People This Summer

A new study has found that this year’s summer heat waves in Europe killed around 50,000 people, with climate change responsible for roughly two thirds of those deaths.

The research examined deaths across 854 cities but did not include rural areas, suggesting the true toll is likely far higher. Scientists have long warned that extreme heat is one of the deadliest consequences of a warming planet, particularly for older people and those with underlying health conditions.

Europe has experienced a succession of severe heat events in recent years, with record temperatures straining hospitals, energy grids and public infrastructure. The findings add to growing evidence that heat related mortality is climbing even as many countries improve their early warning systems.

Researchers said the study underscores the urgency of stronger adaptation measures, including cooling centres, better urban planning and faster cuts to greenhouse gas emissions. The figures also highlight a widening gap between the health impacts of heat in cities and the relative lack of attention paid to rural communities.
