YouTube addressed an issue affecting its global services following widespread disruptions reported by outage-tracking site Downdetector. An error within the recommendation system prevented videos from appearing on multiple YouTube surfaces—be it YouTube.com, its app, or connected platforms like YouTube Music and Kids. The platform stated that all affected areas have been restored.
At its peak, more than 320,000 users reported issues in the US, according to Downdetector’s data. Users worldwide continued to watch billions of hours of content daily on televisions alone—data sourced from Google. These numbers underscore YouTube’s global reach and viewership. Notably, by early 2025, YouTube had reached over 2.5 billion unique monthly users globally.
In a broader context, the platform’s robustness underlines its pivotal role in the digital ecosystem, having been purchased by Google for $1.65 billion in stock back in 2006—a strategic acquisition that combined Google’s expertise in search and advertising with YouTube’s user-centric approach to video sharing.
Meanwhile, issues plagued several countries, including India, Britain, Australia, and Mexico, as reported on DownDetector. These outages reflect the scale of challenges faced by a platform at the heart of digital communication.
