
A driver struck pedestrians in Leipzig’s central area on Monday, resulting in two fatalities, according to police reports.
Fire service director Axel Schuh stated that another two individuals sustained serious injuries and were transported to hospitals. Additionally, around 20 people were affected by the incident but no further details were provided.
The accident occurred at Grimmaische Strasse, a street leading into Leipzig’s main shopping district. The vehicle involved was stopped and posed no ongoing threat, as confirmed by the city website statement.
Mayor Burkhard Jung declared the situation under control and noted that police apprehended the suspect. No motive for the attack has been identified yet.
With over 630,000 residents, Leipzig is one of Germany’s largest cities in the east. Police promised further updates on the case.
