30 Boats Join Global Sumud Flotilla for Gaza Aid Delivery Amid Israeli Blockade

A second humanitarian aid flotilla is set to depart from Barcelona, Spain, carrying medical supplies and other necessities for Palestinians in Gaza. The Global Sumud Flotilla, along with additional vessels expected to join on route, aims to challenge the Israeli blockade.

Last October, Israel halted a similar flotilla of about 40 boats organized by the same group, leading to the arrest of Swedish activist Greta Thunberg and over 450 others.

Israel maintains that it does not restrict supplies for its Gaza residents, despite international aid bodies stating that current aid levels are inadequate. A ceasefire in October included provisions for increased aid delivery.

Liam Cunningham, an actor supporting the flotilla, emphasized the importance of each kilogram of aid as a contribution to humanitarian efforts. The World Health Organization asserts that during armed conflicts, states must ensure access to medical care is maintained under international law.

Saif Abukeshak, a Palestinian activist and member of the organizing committee, stated the mission’s goal is to open a humanitarian corridor for aid delivery organizations. Activists from last year’s flotilla reported inhumane conditions while detained by Israeli forces, an allegation denied by Israel’s foreign ministry spokesperson.
