Following escalating protests across Pakistan in the wake of the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, the United States temporarily suspended its operations at several key diplomatic hubs. The U.S. Consulate General in Peshawar halted all activities as immediate security concerns arose following demonstrations and calls for further unrest.

In Islamabad, the American Citizen Services and Visa appointment slots were canceled for Monday due to ongoing protests surrounding consular sites. Meanwhile, similar disruptions occurred at Karachi and Lahore’s consulates general. A security alert issued by U.S. mission in Pakistan highlighted a surge in activity near consulates, including demands for additional protest calls. Personnel were advised to restrict movements until further notice.

The U.S. warning underscored the necessity for American citizens to stay informed about local developments and maintain vigilance against gatherings, with instructions to update their Smart Traveler Enrolment Programme registrations if necessary. The incident has left a trail of unrest across Pakistan, resulting in at least 23 fatalities from clashes nationwide; these include 10 deaths outside the Karachi consulate, 11 in Skardu, and two casualties near Islamabad.

In Karachi, protesters gathered near the U.S. consulate where gunfire was reported by witnesses. In Lahore, hundreds assembled before the US Consulate, leading to small clashes as officers used tear gas for crowd dispersal. In Islamabad, demonstrators attempted marches towards the US embassy despite stringent security measures and roadblocks along the perimeter of the diplomatic enclave.

Local authorities in Punjab and Islamabad responded swiftly, imposing Section 144 orders to ban public gatherings and rallies to quell rising tensions. Key routes leading to the U.S. Consulate in Karachi were once again closed for a second consecutive day due to heightened security concerns.

This situation underscores the volatile nature of political unrest and its immediate impacts on American diplomatic missions, emphasizing the need for continuous vigilance and preparedness by affected consulates.
