US Urges Support for UN Resolution on Iran

The US has urged countries to support its UN resolution demanding Iran halt attacks and mining in the Strait of Hormuz. This comes as US President Donald Trump prepares for a visit to China, where discussions about the ongoing conflict with Iran are expected.

Diplomats say China and Russia are likely to veto the resolution, similar to their previous vetoes on resolutions that aimed to legitimize US military action against Iran. The new draft was backed by the US, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, and Qatar.

Iran’s UN Ambassador criticized the resolution as “deeply flawed” and politically motivated. Russia has called for the draft to be withdrawn or rewritten, while China contends it is biased and criticizes its use of Chapter VII of the UN Charter.

Despite these obstacles, sources say the US and Iran are moving toward a temporary agreement to halt their conflict, with Tehran reviewing a proposal that would stop fighting but leave major issues unresolved.
