Senior UAE official dismisses Iran’s efforts to enhance control over Strait of Hormuz as unrealistic. Dr Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to UAE President Sheikh Mohamed, posted on X platform that Iran aims to impose a ‘new reality’ in the region following decades of aggressive behavior towards Arab neighbors.

Gargash highlighted growing frustration with Iranian bullying and loss of credibility due to hollow declarations of friendship. His comments follow Iranian authorities announcing plans concerning the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global shipping route, raising concerns among Gulf states about potential instability.

Iran declared a ‘controlled maritime zone’ in the Gulf, asserting control over the Strait of Hormuz that extends into waters of Arab neighbors. The ‘Strait Authority’ post on X stated vessels must obtain authorization and coordinate radio frequencies ahead of transit.

Gargash dismissed any attempts to infringe upon UAE’s maritime sovereignty or dominate the strategic strait as unrealistic. He emphasized that trust between Iran and Arab states cannot be rebuilt through slogans alone but requires responsible discourse, respect for sovereignty, and genuine commitment to principles of good neighborliness.
