Quantum Threat: Powerful Encryption at Risk from Google & IBM’s Quantum Computers

Quantum computers pose an existential threat to modern encryption, according to Google and IBM. These machines could break cryptography protecting banking transactions, government IDs, and classified communications within four years.

The “Q” stands for quantum, with Q-Day marking the moment these machines become powerful enough to decrypt data currently considered unhackable. Traditional computers use binary digits (1 or 0), while quantum computers use qubits that can be both simultaneously, a concept known as superposition. This allows quantum computers to evaluate multiple computations at once and solve problems much faster than traditional ones.

Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, likened the state of quantum computing to artificial intelligence five years ago. Both companies aim to deploy commercially viable quantum technologies by 2030, reinforcing the idea of a Q-Day.

Cryptocurrency firms face special risks as Bitcoin and blockchain rely on encryption techniques that could be exploited by quantum computers. Companies in telecommunications, financial services, and government are developing ‘quantum-safe cryptography techniques’ resistant to quantum attack, marking the biggest cryptographic breakthrough since the internet’s creation.

Researchers acknowledge this could be a false alarm, but many companies prepare for Q-Day as if it is not when but if.
