Achakzai Calls for Full Parliament Security Briefing Amid Regional Tensions

In Pakistan, opposition leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai has demanded a security briefing be presented before the full Parliament rather than just select members. This demand comes as the region faces dangerous developments and escalating tensions.

Achakzai explained that they were informed about the prime minister’s call for a briefing but emphasized their stance: it should be held in front of all legislators, not just a handful. He stated they would directly bring this point to the prime minister, who has pledged to consult with other colleagues before making a decision.

The opposition leader argued that given the precarious regional situation, including joint U.S.-Israel strikes on Iran and Pakistan’s border security concerns, Parliament should be fully briefed. Achakzai suggested convening a joint sitting of Parliament or holding the briefing in the Senate if necessary.

A delegation led by Rana Sanaullah, the adviser to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for political affairs, extended an invitation to attend a key in-camera briefing at the Prime Minister House on Wednesday. The session is set for 11:30 am and Achakzai’s team sought time to discuss with their party members before making a decision.

The opposition leader stressed that he would inform the government of their final stance by the following morning. Meanwhile, Rana Sanaullah highlighted the importance of transcending political divides in national interest during the briefing, advising parties to set aside demands.

According to him, Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has also been invited to attend this crucial session. The prime minister himself convened the meeting to brief political leadership on recent regional developments, including Iran’s Middle East crisis and Pakistan’s border security issues.
