An American surfer with ties to a prominent California family was found dead in Costa Rica following an alleged armed break-in at his home. Kurt Van Dyke, who hailed from Santa Cruz, California, had been competing and promoting the sport within the Caribbean region for years and was known within surfing circles.

Van Dyke’s death occurred on Saturday morning in Cahuita, a coastal town on Costa Rica’s Caribbean side. Police discovered him unresponsive inside an apartment in Talamanca, about 105 miles east of San José. Authorities received a call at around 10:50 AM from someone claiming to have found the man lifeless.

Upon arrival, officers confirmed Van Dyke’s death scene where preliminary reports suggest he was inside his apartment with another woman when two armed individuals entered and allegedly threatened them with a firearm. The suspects are believed to have held the couple for several minutes before stealing valuables.

The body has now been transferred to a forensic morgue in Costa Rica, pending an investigation into the exact cause of death. Security officials remain vigilant as they continue their efforts to identify those responsible for Van Dyke’s grisly demise. A woman who was with him suffered minor injuries but her life was not threatened.

Van Dyke, 66 years old, had been a respected figure in both surfing and his family’s legacy. His mother, Betty Van Dyke, was recognized as one of the early pioneers of women in the sport. His late father, Gene Van Dyke, also made significant contributions to northern California’s surfing community.

His brother, Peter Van Dyke, described Kurt as a “very benevolent, giving person who would help just about anybody.” Raw Surf, a surf media platform, paid tribute by calling his death an “unimaginable loss” for the surfing world.

As of yet, authorities have not made any arrests in this case.
