Atalanta Triumphs With Stoppage-Time Penalty Over Dortmund

In a stunning upset, Atalanta engineered an improbable 4-1 comeback victory over Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday to secure their place in the Champions League round of 16. The Italian side’s remarkable performance against the German giants saw them prevail despite initially trailing 2-0 and being forced into extra time.

The turning point came in the final moments, with Atalanta’s Lazar Samardzic converting a stoppage-time penalty in the 98th minute. Ramy Bensebaini of Dortmund was sent off for his reckless studs that collided with Nikola Krstovic in the penalty area, leaving Atalanta to take advantage.

Atalanta’s Davide Zappacosta celebrated as one of their match-winning players and man-of-the-match. “Everyone had written us off, but this game showed once again how strong our group is,” he said. “We always believe and never give up.”

“This underdog streak shows what we are capable of. We try to surpass ourselves when the pressure mounts, and it’s clear that such determination can make a difference,” Zappacosta added.

For Dortmund, Niko Kovac’s team found themselves at the end of their European dreams after conceding four goals in the playoffs. Emre Can, captain of the side second in the Bundesliga, acknowledged their setbacks: “Conceding so many individual errors makes advancing difficult.”

Despite the loss, Klopp’s Dortmund will need to regroup quickly ahead of Saturday’s crucial match against Bayern Munich for any silverware chances.

The game began with Atalanta taking an early lead through Gianluca Scamacca’s goal. Despite several close calls from Dortmund in the first half, their goalkeeper Gregor Kobel managed to keep his side in contention.

Atalanta maintained their two-goal advantage thanks to a deflected shot by Zappacosta and eventually sealed victory with Mario Pasalic’s header at the far post, pushing Atalanta through with the final touch of the game.

Dortmund’s Karim Adeyemi provided a late spark for his team, scoring in the 75th minute. But it was too little, too late as Dortmund were eliminated despite their spirited second-half comeback attempt. Their captain Emre Can conceded an unnecessary offside penalty when he attempted to clear away a cross with a backheel.

The final moments saw Atalanta’s Marco Carnesecchi making a crucial save on the stroke of half-time, preventing further Dortmund chances before Samardzic’s decisive penalty ensured their Champions League progress.
