Auger-Aliassime Dominates Opening Round in Dubai

Felix Auger-Aliassime from Canada showcased his prowess at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships by advancing to the second round with a convincing 6-3, 7-6 (4) win over Zhizhen Zhang of China. Despite saving four break points throughout the match, Zhang managed to save five match points, forcing a tiebreaker in the deciding set.

Auger-Aliassime will face French qualifier Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard next round. The marathon encounter saw Perricard secure victory with a 7-6 (3), 6-7 (3), and 7-6 (4) scoreline, hitting an impressive 29 aces in the process.

In another significant match at the tournament, British No. 4 seed Jack Draper dispatched French qualifier Quentin Halys in straight sets with scores of 7-6 (8), 6-3, while Swiss wild card Stan Wawrinka defeated fellow wildcard Benjamin Hassan from Lebanon 7-5 and 6-3.

In other matches at the tournament:
– German player Yannick Hanfmann dispatched Dusan Lajovic of Serbia with a straight sets victory. With a 22-to-nine advantage in winners, Hanfmann achieved a tidy victory in just over an hour.
– Seventh seed Francisco Comesana of Spain also prevailed after defeating Pedro Martinez of Spain. The match required two hours and fifty-one minutes to reach the third set tiebreaker, where Comesama saved one match point before securing his win.

In doubles matches:
– Italian qualifier Andrea Pellegrino defeated Argentine qualifier Alex Barrena in straight sets 6-2, 2-6, 6-1.
– Croatian qualifier Dino Prizmic edged Chilean Nicolas Jarry with scores of 6-4, 5-7, and 6-2.

Elsewhere at the tournament:
North Carolina native Patrick Kypson secured his first ATP Tour-level win in nearly two years by defeating Alex de Minaur in a tight three-set match. De Minaur had served for the match but lost to Kypson who converted his lone break point and eventually won the set tiebreaker.

Elsewhere at the tournament, Spanish Rafael Jodar upset fourth-seeded Cameron Norrie of Great Britain with scores of 6-3, 6-2. Additionally, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina from Spain, Valentin Vacherot from Monaco, Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic, and U.S. duo Brandon Nakashima and Aleksandar Kovacevic also advanced to the second round.
