Bannu Attack Linked to Afghan Group, Security Sources Say

In a fresh perspective, recent suicide attacks in Bannu by Pakistani authorities have been linked back to Hafiz Gul Bahadur’s sub-group operating from Afghanistan. Security officials confirm that this group, known as Ittehad-ul-Mujahideen, and its leaders including Hafiz Gul Bahadur are believed to be seeking sanctuary in Afghanistan while orchestrating terrorism in Pakistan.

Officials attribute the March 4, 2025 attack on Bannu Cantt during Ramadan—which was meticulously planned from Afghan soil—to this same group. In September of that year, Major Adnan lost his life bravely combating Fitna-ul-Khawarij militants in another Bannu attack.

Moreover, the sub-group is suspected to have been behind multiple attacks in North and South Waziristan, including Mir Ali. Multiple planning and facilitation activities are traced back to Afghanistan for these incidents as well.

Security sources highlight that Hafiz Gul Bahadur’s presence in Afghanistan underscores the region’s use of Afghan territory for terror operations. They also assert that the Afghan Taliban’s support for terrorist groups provides safe havens, which undermines regional peace initiatives. Evidence indicates over 70% of militants involved in Pakistan’s terror incidents have Afghan origins or links to networks operating from there.

These sources warn that Afghan Taliban patronage of terrorists continues to hinder efforts for stability and security in the region.
